Swingers resort, lifestyle resort, lifestyle-friendly. the labels are confusing. Here is what each one actually means and where Desire and Temptation fit on the spectrum.
If you have spent any time researching adults-only holidays, you will have hit a wall of confusing labels. Lifestyle-friendly, lifestyle resort, clothing-optional, topless-optional, open-minded. The marketing departments love a euphemism. Here is a plain-English guide to what each label actually means.
A standard couples resort like Sandals or Secrets is what the industry calls "vanilla." Lovely holidays with romantic atmosphere, but no expectation that anyone removes clothing beyond standard swimwear. Not what we are discussing here.
Temptation Cancun Resort sits at this level. The resort welcomes singles and couples, the vibe is party-forward, and the Sexy Pool is topless-optional. Nobody is required to go topless, but nobody bats an eyelid if you do. Full nudity is not permitted anywhere on the property. With 430 rooms and 9 pool parties weekly, it is an excellent first step into the more liberated end of the spectrum.
A step further. Designated areas permit full nudity, but it is never mandatory. At Desire Riviera Maya, the Eden wing is the clothing-optional zone with its own pool, jacuzzi, and lounge space. At Desire Pearl, the Au Naturel Pool serves the same purpose. Outside these areas, swimwear is required, and restaurants always enforce a dress code. The key word is "optional." You will find guests in swimsuits next to guests in nothing at all.
"Lifestyle-friendly" means the resort acknowledges and welcomes guests who are part of "the lifestyle," a broad term for couples who engage in some form of consensual non-monogamy. That could mean soft swap, full swap, voyeurism, exhibitionism, or simply enjoying a sexually charged atmosphere together. A lifestyle-friendly resort does not actively facilitate swinging, but it does not prohibit it in private spaces either.
Both Desire Riviera Maya (110 rooms) and Desire Pearl (152 rooms) fall into this category. They attract a genuine mix: lifestyle couples, curious couples, naturists, and plenty of pairs who simply want a holiday without children.
A dedicated lifestyle resort goes further. These properties actively cater to the swinging community with playrooms, organised events, and an expectation that most guests are there for sexual exploration. Desire sits on the boundary. It has a playroom, theme nights with erotic energy, and an atmosphere that encourages flirtation. But it is not a sex club with hotel rooms attached. The majority of guests are there for the freedom, the atmosphere, and the connection with their partner.
The term "the lifestyle" is an umbrella covering a wide range of consensual adult activities between couples:
Many lifestyle couples do none of these things at a resort. They enjoy the energy, the openness, and the conversations. The lifestyle is as much a mindset as a set of activities.
This distinction matters. A swingers club is a single-purpose venue. A lifestyle resort is a holiday first. You wake up, swim, read a book, eat at one of nine restaurants, watch the sunset, and then, if you choose, you might attend a theme night or visit the playroom. Or you might have an early night. Nobody tracks your participation.
Choosing the wrong resort leads to disappointment in both directions. Book vanilla when you wanted freedom and you will feel stifled. Book a lifestyle resort when you wanted a quiet beach and you will feel overwhelmed.
If you want a high-energy party with a hint of liberation, Temptation Cancun is your starting point. If you want a more intimate, clothing-optional experience with the option to explore at your own pace, Desire Pearl or Desire Riviera Maya is where you belong.
The single most important thing to understand is that "lifestyle-friendly" does not mean "anything goes." It means "whatever you are comfortable with goes, and nothing more." That distinction is what makes these resorts work.
