Chichen Itza, cenotes, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres. What is accessible from each resort and how to arrange it.
As much as you might want to spend every moment at your resort, the Yucatan Peninsula is one of the most extraordinary regions in the Americas. Ancient ruins, underground rivers, turquoise Caribbean waters, and vibrant Mexican culture are all within easy reach. Both Desire and Temptation offer concierge services to book day trips, and the options are genuinely world-class.
Geography matters for planning. Desire Riviera Maya (both the main resort and Pearl) sits near Puerto Morelos, about 30 minutes south of Cancun. Temptation Cancun Resort is in the Cancun Hotel Zone itself, right on the beach strip. This means travel times vary depending on which resort you are at.
Temptation is closer to Isla Mujeres and central Cancun. Desire is closer to the Riviera Maya attractions like Tulum, the cenotes, and the eco-parks. Both have easy access to everything listed below.
Chichen Itza: The iconic Mayan pyramid and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is about a 2.5-hour drive from either resort, so leave early. Most tours depart around 7am and return by late afternoon. The scale of the ruins is breathtaking, and a good guide transforms the experience from "big pyramid" to a genuine understanding of Mayan civilisation. Go on a day you are happy to skip the pool.
Tulum ruins: Perched on cliffs above the Caribbean, these ruins are more photogenic than Chichen Itza, though smaller. About 90 minutes from Desire, two hours from Temptation. The combination of ancient stone and turquoise sea below is unforgettable. Arrive early to beat the crowds and the heat.
Cenotes: The Yucatan is riddled with cenotes, natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear freshwater. Swimming in a cenote is magical. Some are open to the sky, others are underground caves with shafts of light cutting through. Popular ones include Gran Cenote near Tulum, Cenote Ik Kil near Chichen Itza, and Cenote Azul near Puerto Morelos. Your concierge can recommend less crowded options.
Isla Mujeres: A short ferry from Cancun, this small island has a completely different pace. Golf cart around the island, eat fresh ceviche, snorkel at the southern reef, and watch the sunset from the western shore. It is a perfect half-day or full-day escape. Easy to reach from Temptation, about an hour's transfer from Desire.
Snorkelling the Mesoamerican Reef: The world's second-largest barrier reef runs right along this coast. Puerto Morelos has a particularly healthy section, and boat trips to the reef take about 15 minutes. You will see sea turtles, rays, and an absurd variety of tropical fish. Desire guests can practically walk to the departure point.
Xcaret: A massive eco-archaeological park with underground rivers, a butterfly pavilion, snorkelling, and an evening show featuring traditional Mexican music and dance. It is polished and well-run, and genuinely worth a full day. About 45 minutes from Desire.
Xel-Ha: An all-inclusive natural water park built around a stunning inlet. Unlimited snorkelling, cliff jumping, zip lines, and all the food and drink you can manage. More relaxed than Xcaret, and excellent for couples who want a mix of activity and lounging.
Zip-lining: Several operators offer zip line courses through the jungle canopy. Xplor park combines zip lines with underground rafting and amphibious vehicles for a full adventure day.
Not every excursion needs to be a full-day affair. Puerto Morelos town is a ten-minute taxi from Desire and has a charming central square, excellent seafood restaurants, and a relaxed fishing-village atmosphere. Cancun's downtown (as opposed to the Hotel Zone) offers authentic Mexican food markets and shopping that most tourists never see.
The resort is the main event, but the Yucatan deserves at least a day or two of your attention. You will not regret it.
